Fluoride is documented to be safe and highly effective when used in small amounts. Fluoride helps to prevent tooth decay by encouraging “remineralization,” or strengthening of weak areas on the teeth that are susceptible to cavity formation.
Topical fluoride treatments come in a number of different forms, and fluoride varnish is one of the newer types that can be applied after your child’s teeth are cleaned.
The benefits of topical fluoride varnish include:
- Quick and easy application
- Decreases the potential amount of fluoride digested
- Continues to “soak” fluoride into the enamel for 24 hours after it is applied
Children who benefit the most from fluoride treatments are those at highest risk for dental decay. Risk factors include a history of decay; a high sugar, high carbohydrate diet; orthodontic appliances and medical conditions such as dry mouth.
